How long does it take to build cabinets?

Hi Reader,

Join me for a live Q&A at 9AM PT (12PM ET) TOMORROW Saturday, June 20. I’ll be hanging out for an hour to answer your questions and help you make decisions about your home projects.

It’s a totally free way to get some independent, expert advice on whatever house-related challenges you’re facing right now. You can register here.

“How long does it take to build cabinets?”

Not long is the truthful answer, but actually that’s a question you ask at the end of the process, once all of the decisions have been made.

It’s like building a car. A car itself doesn’t take long to roll off the production line. But the design and engineering take much, much longer. That’s where you should invest your time and effort.

With cabinets (and renovations in general), the planning part takes far longer than the execution. It doesn't take much time to actually build the cabinets.

The better question is: what does the planning part look like, so that by the time you're ready to build, all the right decisions have already been made?

I’ve written more on kitchen reno planning and timelines here and here — but the short answer is, it starts with budget. Then functionality. Then everything else.

The functionality of the kitchen is much more important than how long it will take to build your cabinets. Planning for your functionality will help you make the right decisions for your kitchen.

The planning part, done properly, will probably take 10 times longer — but it’s also the part that makes the building easy and keeps your budget and timeline on track.

But as always, every kitchen is different and most of the time, my answer will start with “It depends.”

This is why conversations are so important — and why I’m hosting my first community Q&A tomorrow. Come join me tomorrow morning at 9 am Pacific (12 pm Eastern) on Zoom and tell me about your project, and I can give you an answer that works for your specific situation.

You can sign up here. It’ll be a small group so I guarantee we’ll get to your question.

See you tomorrow morning!
